30 Day Song Challenge: Day 1

This month, along with 5 other bloggers (you may want to check in with the April Song Challenge blogroll I have added on the right) I will be posting daily for the first time ever. 30 days of songs. I’m a singer first, so vocals, harmony & lyrics weigh heavily when it comes to my opinion of music. I am a bass player too, so I also enjoy a good beat and a bass-line that moves. I truly hope you will enjoy getting to peek into my musical mind. Although, 30 days will not appropriately capture everything. If I have the energy after these 30 days of daily posting, I may mention the notable missing artists at the end of this journey. But I hope to cover many of my favorites.

Day 1: Your Favorite Song. These are the Days, 10,000 Maniacs

Picking my favorite song was a huge challenge for me. I’m a rock & roll girl. I love sharp vocals with complicated harmonies & big, long guitar-solos; this song doesn’t have more than a fairly simple 2-part harmony and not much of a guitar solo at all. I even shocked the hubs with this selection. His favorite song is a 10 minute Jane’s Addiction gem that I will feature on another day, so it’s covered.

I don’t have many hits over the course of these 30 days of songs, but I do understand why These Are The Days was a hit in 1992. So why did I pick this song? The lyrics, the harmonies, seeing it performed live with so much energy & joy when we sat front row at a Natalie Merchant concert at The Joint in Vegas – like, super front row: my knees touched the stage, and we used that stage to set our beers on. Natalie could’ve kicked us in the face with her bare-feet! However… the biggest reason I selected this song is because the hubs & I have sang it together, usually with me on lead vocals, and the hubs on acoustic guitar at several family & friends’ weddings, coffee-shops, bars, graduation parties, campfires, backyards, but lately, simply hanging out in our living room, watching the kids dance as we sing & play. It’s practically a part of me. The lyrics are very positive & upbeat and it covers so much of what I love about life in general. I won’t do this for every song, but the lyrics are important, so here they are.

these are days you’ll remember

never before and never since, I promise
will the whole world be warm as this
and as you feel it, you’ll know it’s true
that you are blessed and lucky
it’s true, that you are touched by something
that will grow and bloom in you

these are the days you’ll remember

when May is rushing over you with desire
to be part of the miracles you see in every hour
you’ll know it’s true, that you are blessed and lucky
it’s true, that you are touched by something
that will grow and bloom in you

these are the days
that you might fill with laughter
until you break
these days you might feel a shaft of light
make its way across your face
and when you do
you’ll know how it was meant to be
see the signs and know their meaning
you’ll know how it was meant to be
hear the signs and
know they’re speaking to you
to you

What’s not to love about this song?! Can you name your favorite song?
