Cabin Fever

Whether you’re stuck under a gajillion feet of snow in Michigan, or fighting ice and below freezing temps in the south… this winter has been BRUTAL! And this is coming from someone who loves winter! I know… I must sound completely insane, but honestly, I do love winter. Seeing the big, sparkly flakes fall from the sky, skiing, sledding, drinking around a bonfire at Winter Beer Fest, the list goes on.

But… this winter is different.

Here in West Michigan, we’ve been shoveling snow daily since Thanksgiving. The piles on the curbs are unbelievable. Just pulling out of a driveway requires a wish and a prayer that another car isn’t coming… because you can’t tell!

Everyone’s mailboxes are buried in my neighborhood. I can’t even imagine being a mail carrier this winter.

It’s not just the snow though… it’s the sub-zero temps. If we’re not breaking our backs shoveling the insane amount of snow (seriously people, I’m talking a record breaking 100″ of snow this season!) we’re stuck inside, because it’s too damn cold to do the usual array of winter sports I tend to love. Except for drinking… which you can do anywhere, of course.

This brings me to my Beer of the Week. Because, it’s absolutely fair to say the everyone is suffering from a mad case of Cabin Fever. And the only cure is… more cowbell. oh wait… that’s not… it. More beer! The cure = beer!

We’re all itching to go outside. Or just go anywhere without the white-knuckles it’ll take to get us from Point A to Point B!

NHCabinFeverLogoOur fuses are short… the vent-sessions are long. Positivity? Fuck that shit. My kids, who somehow have me pegged as their cruise director “Entertain me! Now! I’m bored!” have had too many snow days… my positive attitude was shot to hell looooong ago. When they do have school, they haven’t been able to play outside (our school has a 10 degree and above threshold to play outside… and they do go outside most days… just not this winter) so my kids fight with each other from the moment they leave school until… they go to bed at night.

So those short fuses are erupting between my kids, between myself and my kids, between the hubs & me… ugh.

To say this has been a brutal winter is an understatement. I’m over it.

And that’s why my Beer of the Week is New Holland’s Cabin Fever. I think most of us could stand to put a little alcohol on this winter. Maybe in the form of a big tall beer.

What’s so great about Cabin Fever? Other than the awesome name and label?

This Roasty Brown Ale from New Holland Brewing clocks in at 6.5% ABV, which makes it a very drinkable beverage whether your staying in, or going out. There are carmelly notes of brown sugar with a hint of smoke and coffee. Cabin Fever is a medium-bodied beer that will warm your belly and calm your nerves, without knocking you into hibernation. Even if we could use a little hibernation at this point.

Where can you get your mittens on your own bottle of New Holland’s Cabin Fever? Check out their beer finder here!

If you have a suggestion for a beer I MUST try in the coming weeks, please email me: MommaNeedsABeer {at} gmail {dot} com with the subject Beer of the Week. Although I adore having access to many delicious Michigan beers, I’d love to expand my palate to beers with broader availability. If I choose to feature your beer, I will send you a MNAB magnet and mention you on here as well as facebook and twitter, if you’re into such things.

This winter sucks balls. Hard. We have another snowmageddon/freeze thing coming to Alabama tomorrow, so I had to bring four pounds of work home with me in case I get stuck. I also just bought pretty much an entire grocery store. Curious–have you tried Sam Adams Cold Snap? I just saw the commercial for it last night and it looked interesting. Sam Adams is my usual go-to if local stuff isn’t available. Hope your temperatures rise soon! xo

I can’t believe how hard you guys have been hit this year. At least we live in the “snow-belt” of Michigan and can somewhat handle it… unless it’s too cold for the salt to work, then we’re screwed. 😉 I’m an equal opportunity drinker, so I’ll have to check out your beer recommendation, Jen! Thanks! I hear we’re getting a thaw next week. Hope you will too.

Our snow just keeps coming and coming and coming here. We got 18-19 inches the other day with 5 that evening, a respite today and then supposedly 5 more tonight. He’ll have a 5 day weekend. Whoa.

Goodness. Just what you needed! Our kids have had one full week of school so far this year. ONE! I hope the temps are at least mild enough to play in all of the snow you now have. And/or you have plenty of alcohol on hand.
