Careless Whisper

I am a big fan of the small brewery.

Careless Whsiper

Hey look, it’s the hubs and I drinking our Careless Whispers away. I’m never gonna dance again…

While I love a good beer from the big dogs like Founders, I enjoy visiting breweries where I can walk in, be welcomed with a hug by the brewer and chat about craft beer over a beer they just happened to create with their own two hands.

Last year, I had the pleasure of visiting Our Brewing Company in downtown Holland, Michigan. I feel like we developed an instant friendship with 2 of the 4 owners, Trevor & Lisa Doublestein; the hubs and I even played a couple gigs out there this past summer. We don’t have the opportunity to visit Our Brewing as much as we’d like, but let me tell you, if you get a chance to visit Holland, either on your way up north, down to Chicago, or just because you’re hitting up the lakeshore, stop in and you won’t be disappointed.

One of my favorite IPAs is Our Brewing Company’s Careless Whisper IPA. They had me at the name alone. You know you have the song in your head now… At 7.1% ABV, it’s a very drinkable IPA that won’t knock you down onto your guilty feet after one. The rich notes of citrus and hops are balanced with a slight hint of malty caramel in the finish. I could drink this beer any day of the week, winter, spring, summer or fall. Oh wait, that’s another song entirely. I would also recommend Careless Whisper to anyone uneasy about IPAs… while IPAs are my current obsession, I wasn’t always a fan of hoppy beers. Our Brewing Co’s Careless Whisper is definitely worth a few tastes.

Our Brewing Co will be at the Michigan Brewer’s Guild Winter Beer Fest here in Grand Rapids this weekend, serving up Careless Whispers and a few other delicious selections. The nice thing about the smaller breweries at beer festivals? No lines. Walk right up, no need to wait a half hour to fill your empty sample cup!

If you can’t make it to the MI Winter Beer Fest, or to Holland, Our Brewing just began distributing to a few local pubs in Grand Rapids. Trevor Doublestein actually delivered the first batch from Holland to Grand Rapids via bike!

For those of you looking for a beer outside of Michigan, I will feature one you can find on a wider distribution level next week!

If you have a suggestion for a beer I MUST try in the coming weeks, please email me: MommaNeedsABeer {at} gmail {dot} com with the subject Beer of the Week. Although I adore having access to many delicious Michigan beers (and will continue to feature smaller breweries’ creations) I’d love to expand my palate to beers with broader availability. If I choose to feature your beer, I will send you a MNAB magnet and mention you on here as well as facebook and twitter, if you’re into such things.
