Beer of the Week: Dark Horse 4 Elf Winter Warmer Ale

Yes, yes, quit your whining, I realize the holidays are O-V-E-R… however, as I was grocery shopping in my post-Polar-Vortex haze last week, I took a glance at the local beer shelves and could not resist snagging a 4-pack of Dark Horse Brewing Co’s 4 Elf Winter Warmer Ale. It was my first 4 Elf sighting of the season; this beer can be a challenge to acquire.

I know I promised a non-Michigan craft beer last week, but it will have to wait until next week. This week, I’m warming up with Dark Horse Brewing Company’s

4 Elf Winter Warmer Ale4 Elf

Dark Horse’s 4 Elf Winter Warmer Ale lives up to its’ name, as it is definitely a belly warmer… not to mention a head warmer and social lubricant at 8.75% ABV. The hubs and I split this 12 oz bottle of dark ale into 2 tulip glasses, which was plenty for both of us to snuggle up with by the fire.

If you followed me last autumn, you may have enjoyed my adventures navigating through the wonderful world of Pumpkin Ales via YouTube. Dark Horse’s 4 Elf Winter Warmer could be placed into that category, however, 4 Elf has more of a gingerbread flavor. On top of the spicy flavors of clove, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg, this is a much heavier beer than the pumpkin ales you may have enjoyed tailgating with in the fall. There are notes of roasted nuts and chocolate. This beer may get you to start singing Chestnuts roasting on an open fire… by the time you have emptied your glass.

Where can you find Dark Horse’s 4 Elf Winter Warmer Ale? Dark Horse actually hosts a 4 Elf Party every December, celebrating this delicious Winter Warmer, but also features loads of unique and rare beers only available that day, at that particular party. 4 Elf Winter Warmer Ale can also be found wherever Dark Horse is sold. (until they run out, of course, this is obviously a seasonal beer)

Dark Horse is located in Marshall, Michigan, about a half-hour east of the Kalamazoo area. I have had the pleasure of visiting the brewery, complete with a tour and a visit to the VIP lounge. I highly HIGHLY recommend taking the $10 brewery tour when you visit. Along with the tour, you’ll receive a Dark Horse pint glass, and a special sampling of unique beers that may not be available in the taproom in the exclusive VIP loft, overlooking the production facilities.

If you have a suggestion for a beer I MUST try in the coming weeks, please email me: MommaNeedsABeer {at} gmail {dot} com with the subject Beer of the Week. If I choose to feature your beer, I will send you a MNAB magnet and mention you on here as well as facebook and twitter, if you’re into such things.
