A song that makes you fall asleep: Subterranean Homesick Alien, Radiohead
I hate flying. When the hubs & I lived in Tucson, we had to fly back & forth to our hometown in Michigan several times a year. It’s one of the reasons we moved back, because we got sick to death of all the issues that accompany flying. My one salvation was the first album I would listen to when we were allowed to listen to electronic devices: Radiohead’s OK Computer. Ahhhh. I love this album. It’s definitely among my top 5 favorite albums, and occasionally rests atop that list (my top 5 varies from day to day, depending on my mood, what’s going on in my life, etc). Like The Beatles, I’ve had to resist using many Radiohead gems during these 30 days.
Back to this song & story though. When the hubs & I first started flying back & forth between Michigan & Arizona, iPods didn’t exist. We had to bring CD wallets that only held a few CDs (compared with the thousands of songs you can pack into an iPod today) I feel like an aging hippy here… in my day, we didn’t have those fancy-shmancy tiny iPods, we had to physically bring CDs and a bulky device to play them on. We actually listened to full albums back then. But we did it, and we liked it, because that’s the way it was.
In 1998, OK Computer was my favorite album to listen to on headphones, so it was just a natural selection to listen to it first once I boarded the airplane bound for Tucson. It was a tradition I never let go of. To this day, whenever I fly, OK Computer is still the first album I listen to. I crave it. I love listening to the deliberate, loud guitars in Airbag when we take off, Thom York’s soothing me with his light, velvet vocals… and by the time the incredible & relaxing Subterranean Homesick Alien begins, I’ve let go & forgotten about the stress & anxiety I had before takeoff. There have been many times that I have fallen asleep listening to this song, usually waking up to the tambourines shaking in Electioneering… love it.
Do you have a song you enjoy falling asleep to?
Keeping up with 2 little girls, writing assignments, music gigs, the house, laundry, ETC, backwards, wearing ass kicking boots and a smile, without spilling my beer. Ok, ok, so I spill my beer, but my floors have never been more germ-free since I started putting a little alcohol on them. Who needs ammonia...
