Day 6: A Song That Reminds You of Somewhere

A song that reminds you of somewhere: Rock Me Right, Susan Tedeschi

There are many albums & songs I can relate to certain places. But this one is associated with a sacred time in my life. My life in Tucson, AZ. A month or two after we had moved from Michigan to Arizona, I was driving home from the grocery store by myself, feeling a little blah, when a very smart rock DJ said “I just got my hands on this new album yesterday and I haven’t been able to listen to anything else. Wait’ll you hear this rockin’ blues singer!” I was interested! All I needed to hear was this kick-ass chic singing: You say you haven’t been rocked in a long long time… and I was a fan.

The hubs & I obsessed over Susan Tedeschi’s Just Won’t Burn as we drove around & got to know the breathtaking city of Tucson while blaring this album. If I close my eyes while Susan sings, I can almost see the mountains, and saguaro cactus! I’ve listened to this album many times over the years and Susan Tedeschi has become a backdrop to many fun times & places in my life. Like when we saw her in concert at Meijer Gardens with my girls, Sedona was only a few months old, so I nursed her a couple times during the show and soaked in the amazing moment. The weather was beautiful, the music: incredible.

So whenever I hear Susan’s raw, gorgeous voice & mean guitar, my heart can’t help but feel alive. Whether I’m thinking about the mountains in Tucson, or the peace I felt watching her perform live with my kids. Sorry, Susan, but your blues send me to a very happy place! I love how music can transport you like that. As much as I have grown since I heard Rock Me Right for the first time, the root of my soul remains the same, and I’m so thrilled with the person I have morphed into, but grateful for the life I lived before today.
Do you have a song that reminds you of a particular time or place?
