A Song That Reminds You of a Certain Event: Zak & Sara, Ben Folds
Ben Folds released Rockin’ The Suburbs on September 11, 2001. Every one of us in the circle of friends we were hanging out with back then loved Ben Folds, and we each got this album within days of it’s release. A few weeks after 9/11, the 8 of us rented a cottage up in Ludington for a weekend, something we dubbed “Self-abuse weekend”. Enough said, yes? But that weekend in particular, we were all sick to death of all the 9/11 coverage. Remember how it seemed endless and let’s face it, pointless to a certain degree? So we specifically looked for a place we could escape media, just listen to music, play board games, share a ton of laughs while getting plastered as twenty-somethings tend to do. We succeeded. And this album was played once a day each of the 3 days we were there. Zak & Sara is the 2nd track on Rockin’ the Suburbs, so when it came on, the song always got everyone dancing & singing. We would occasionally hit repeat to hear it again, it’s such a fun song. Such an incredible album to sing along to, and absorb yourself in, no matter what you’re going through — big or small.
I’d never choose to be transported back to that awful event, but I have to admit, that weekend was a very fun escape from it… and from life in general. Do you have a song that reminds you of a certain event?
